This work is purely based on curiosity and the challenge in sculpting the details.
I wanted to model a mantis. I was not sure which one and how I wanted it to be posed. So I started finding references to help me conceptualise my ideas. While searching, I came across Empusa pennata — I was immediately amused by its beauty. That is when I decided I want to sculpt this beautiful life form.
I started by modelling each individual part separately, because I wanted to 3D print this model. Working on one part at a time gave me more understanding and flexibility throughout the build.
This was one of my favourite works.
This was very challenging work — a true test of conceptual learning. The project took months, but I enjoyed every part of it.
I learnt patience and persistence. When I felt overwhelmed by the challenges of sculpting, I took a break and did not return to the project unless I felt calm and had a way to overcome the challenge.
